7 STEPS TO MAKE HADASSAH LIFE'S BALMS FOR AFROS & NOFROS

Updated: Feb 4

Have you ever stopped to wonder why your scalp and the hair that lives within, is never happy with the products you use, and forever growing thin?

Have you ever inspected the ingredients on the packet to realise why your head looks and feels like a broken racket and from your research, find it's the carcinogenic chemicals, making your heads look and feel like tennis balls?

Well Wimbledon draws near and summer is definitely here and with the impending drought for the nation, it's time to take action for hydration. So lets get to your making station and produce some natural moisturisation, for when your on the go for your Afro or Nofro.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

  • Hemp Seed Oil 67g *

  • Cocoa Butter 111g *

  • Bees Wax 111g *

  • Coconut Oil 333g *

  • Arrowroot Powder/Cornstarch 7g *

  • Magnesium Chloride Flakes 40g *

  • Filtered Water 40g (I use filtered water with that also contains Shungite Stones) *

  • Heat Proof Jug 2ltr (Just buy from a pound store but Avoid Aluminium)

  • Spatulas (To save on waste by getting every little bit of balm out of the jug)

  • Food Bag Clip & Kitchen Weighing Scales (Not a necessity)

  • Stick Blender & or Electric Whisk or Hand Whisk

  • Piping Bags (You can get these from you local pound store)

  • Tins/Jars (This recipe caters for eight 4oz or four 8oz tins or jars- but you can ix it up)

  • Essential Oils 130 Drops of your favourite for a light scent or 190 for a heavier scent (I use a particular blend for my 'HIS & HER' Afro Balms which are mentioned in the product descriptions on my site).

  • Handy TIP - Do a quick web search of your favourite essential oil scents that you would like to add, not only to please your nasal senses, but to benefit from their properties from a health perspective, i.e. You suffer with Stress, Anxiety, Depression, Poor Blood Circulation, Skin Ailments, Insomnia etc. Why not tackle more and remedy that of which you suffer from with one product, rather than having an expensive range of multiple products, that probably carry a warning certificate of possible harm not only to you but your pocket as well. My 'HIS & HER' Balm product descriptions cover a broad spectrum of the possible health benefits from all of the ingredients, essential oils inclusive. I do not claim them to be a cure but they may help, doing your own research will always bring clarity and truth.

NOW FOR THE METHOD

STEP #1

Make sure your work station and tools are clean and sterilised, keep everything out of the reach of children and pets.

STEP #2

Half fill a large pan with tap water and place either a folded tea towel/dish cloth/flat sponge in the bottom and bring to the boil, meanwhile place all ingredients above with an * into your jug. When the water reaches boiling point, turn down the heat so the water just bubbles gently, then gently place the jug of ingredients* onto the tea towel/dish cloth/flat sponge in the pan so the jug doesn't touch the bottom.

KEY NOTE - You will find that the Bees Wax* will take a little longer to melt down, do not short cut the process by using a microwave, just be patient with your occasional brisk stirring.

STEP #3

Whilst the ingredients* slowly melt down with you occasionally checking it's progress and stirring every now again, you can make up the magnesium oil*, which is really simple. Place your Filtered Water* into a small pan and gently heat but not to boiling point! Then, add your Magnesium Flakes* and stir until dissolved. When the magnesium flakes* have dissolved, which is pretty quick really, leave to cool for a couple of minutes then add the Arrowroot Powder* stirring immediately and briskly with a hand whisk or fork. Leave to one side when dissolved and combined.

STEP #4

Place a tea towel or cloth on you work surface, then place your jug of melted ingredients* onto it, just being extra careful in case of slips and spills, especially for the next process. Have your stick blender at the ready and pour what is now your cooled 'Magnesium Oil' from your small pan into your jug of melted ingredients* and blend together using your stick blender or electric whisk. Now if you only have a hand whisk, then I suggest you combine the Melted Ingredients* and Magnesium Oil* in a large bowl and be prepared to add some elbow grease! Moving on swiftly or not so, to Step #5.......

STEP #5

Now you have finally arrived at step 5, especially if you have had to apply some elbow grease in the previous step..sorry!, it's time to add your favourite smelling essential oils. I would highly recommend you do your research as mentioned in my TIP before, so you can really experience the full potential of any possible health benefits. Add your chosen essential oils to the jug of ingredients and use your stick blender to really combine everything together. You will notice that the mixture is now starting to thick or solidify. Once thoroughly mixed, place the jug in safe and cool part of the house. Thereafter do half hourly checks and using an electric whisk if you can, give the mixture which is now turning into a balm and good aerating, do this a good few times as it adds volume to the balm and gives it a softer buttery feel.

STEP #6

When you have gone through the aerating process a good few times and have a achieved a fluffy or buttery consistency to your liking, it time to bag and squeeze that luscious and lovingly home made balm into your pots or jars.

  • Handy Tip - If you have a spare jug place your plastic piping bag into it and open out the edges of the bag over the lip of the jug, a bit like giving your jug an inner coat. This will free up your hands for the next bit, which is to pour or scoop out the balm with your spatula from the other jug into the now freely open piping bag that you have just placed in the other jug...dear me it's all jugs isn't it!!

Be careful not to overfill the piping bag so you leave enough room to either hold the bag with a twist to close the the opening, or you can use a good food bag clip/tie. Lift out the closed piping bag which will be warm from the balm and holding the end you've just closed, very tightly and securely, give it a few spinney swings so the balm gathers to the point. Ready your pots or jars (Sterilised with boiling water) and weighing scales, that's if you want to be absolutely precise with your measurements. And don't forget to tare your scales whilst the pot or jar is on them, that's if they all weigh the same. Now go ahead and using scissors snip of the end of the piping bag to create about an inch circumference spout, for you to start squeezing and piping into your pots and seal.

STEP #7

You can create your own bespoke labels or even shrink wrap so you can share your lovingly home made created Afro or Nofro Balms with family and friends. This balm is suited to most hair types and can be used directly on the scalp if you no longer have hair like I do, as I benefit greatly from the Magnesium soaked up by the skin due to my shaking condition, which has significantly subsided within a few short months, this I can testify.

FINALLY

If all of the above seems a little too much of a do with your lifestyle and commitments, or you are not sure you would want to invest in your own home made balm, then why not try some before taking the leap. This way you will identify at first hand whether this balm is for you and that the overall savings available through making your own is a true and significant benefit value to your health and pocket for YOU! If this is the case then off ya pop below and click on your preferred product and use code AFROBALMTRY20 to get 20% OFF your first order
